Energola: Side Shutter for Pergola

A Multi-Functional Design by Jaroslaw Markowicz

Incorporating Solar Energy into Sun Protection

The Energola side shutter is a multi-functional product dedicated to pergolas, balconies, and large glazed spaces. Designed by Jaroslaw Markowicz, this innovative solution not only provides sun protection but also harnesses solar energy to produce clean power. Each individual wing of the side shutter is equipped with a micro photovoltaic panel, allowing for adjustable sun and wind protection. The mobile energy functions are powered by solar energy, and any surplus energy can be sent to the building's energy network.

The Energola design is based on extruded profiles, with solar panels mounted on the main profile. This assembly method enables easy separation of materials for recycling, making it an environmentally friendly choice. The standard module has a width of 1000mm and a height of 2200mm, but it can be scaled and adapted to meet the user's specific requirements.

Energola is a moving product that adapts to the user's needs. Using a remote control, the tilt of the wings can be adjusted effortlessly. The operation is simple and requires no additional power supply, providing a user-friendly experience.

The project was developed in Warsaw, with conceptual work starting in September 2019. After numerous prototypes and tests, the design was successfully implemented in January 2020. The main research focus was on developing a lightweight, compact, and solar-powered wing rotation system. Extensive testing on 3D printed models allowed for the refinement of the aluminum profiles to meet the required parameters.

One of the major challenges faced during the project was creating a product that maintained its lightness despite the inclusion of internal electronics and photovoltaic panels. However, the team overcame this obstacle and created a design that seamlessly integrates functionality and aesthetics.

The Energola side shutter not only enhances the visual appeal of pergolas, balconies, and glazed spaces but also contributes to sustainable energy production. By utilizing the building's surface and surroundings, this design exemplifies the fusion of art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology in a practical and efficient manner.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Building Materials and Construction Components category in 2020. This prestigious accolade is awarded to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Energola side shutter stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.
